Feng Shui This | What Spooked My Horse?

We say horses who are nervous or jumpy are “spooked”.  Well,  those horses are literally being bothered by “spooks” in one form or another and I’ve had great success getting rid of them.   One horse was impossible to ride, another just difficult.  One “spooked” at one spot in the pasture, while another showed extreme animosity toward his farrier.  All these horses had something very real bothering them, and all are much, much better now that those things are gone.

Today the clouds were fluffy and the horses were gorgeous.   I’m thankful to be able to enjoy such a day with some of the most beautiful animals on earth.      But, what I really love is being able to do something that will keep those beautiful animals from hurting their owners or the farriers who work with them.

Feng Shui This | Nashville Flood

What is it about water that keeps us going back?  It’s not just the necessity of it for our bodies, of course we need water to live.  But, what is it that draws people to live on the edge of water?  It’s not so much the life on it, but the life in it.  Water brings us movement, wealth, life, and energy.  From the beginning of time our ancestors built their homes along the banks of streams, rivers, lakes and seas.  Water produces as well as transports our food.  It gives us our livelihood, as well as our entertainment.  For years, the Cumberland River has brought prosperity to Nashville, and now it seems it has brought ruin.   Lets look at what the water does in the long term, though.

When I was a little girl I often went to visit my grandparents in Barbourville, KY.  Their farm on that same Cumberland River was a showplace.  The back porch looked out over a beautiful river bottom where every year the floods would come and replenish the land.  Backwater in spring meant fertile land for good crops in the coming summer.

Back then there was very little flood control.  The levee protected parts of the city, but for the most part the town was prone to flooding every spring.  People looked at floods as a natural risk when you lived on the river.  I remember going to visit a neighbor who had his house on the riverbank.  In the ceiling there were hooks where he would hang his furniture when the water got high.  He would never dream of moving.  For him, life on the river was worth it.

Nowadays we are used to having control of our environments.  We flip a switch to turn night into day, push a button to regulate the temperature in our homes, turn a key to drive anywhere we want in perfect comfort.  We can have tomatos out of season, even fruits and vegetables delivered from all over the world.  There seem to be no limits to our control.

Then nature speaks and we must listen.  The city of Nashville will heal, and as it does it will grow in strength and beauty.  And, people will remember for a time what happened that day nature showed us all who’s in charge.

Feng Shui This | Are You Paying Attention?

There is a tradition among many native Americans that everyone has a power animal, or totem.  These animals are there to guide us and warn us of problems in the road ahead.  I always wondered what mine was, if indeed I had been assigned one by the powers that be.   So, not terribly long ago I did a guided meditation to find my power animal.  During this meditation I imagined I was entering a cave and would find it somewhere underground.
As I went deeper into the cave I realized I was riding on the back of a donkey, around little turns and down the steep path until we came to a clear, wide stream.  On the other side of the stream was a beautiful whitetail buck, pawing at the ground and shaking his antlers.  I said aloud, “Oh, how beautiful.  I bet he is my power animal.”

Donkey

To that the donkey replied, “Hmph.  What about the Jackass you rode in on?”
I had completely missed the fact that I had been safely carried into a dark and unfamiliar cave by my surefooted, loyal, funny donkey.

Feng Shui This – Ethics

First, let me make clear that this post is about an IMAGINARY house.  No homes have been hurt in the building of this story…and no clients past or current have been represented.

What does Feng Shui have to do with ethics?  In my Feng Shui business I come across houses with Feng Shui charts that would send me into a panic if my family had to live there.  It has nothing to do with the size or cost of the home, the unfortunate charts are non-discriminatory.

So lets say there’s a house and the Feng Shui chart is so bad the owners cannot live there anymore.  There’s been bankruptsy, sickness, divorce and death…nasty, nasty Feng Shui.  We’ll even run over the imaginary dog and have the imaginary cat coughing up hairballs the size of pumpkins on a daily basis…in the master bedroom…on the bed.  Add a spook or two and SHAZAM…bonified disaster chart.

By now they’re figuring out there’s a crisis and drastic measures are called for, so they call the nearest Feng Shui Master…so now what?  Well, it’s not always hopeless.  Sometimes people can be taught to use the house differently, ghosts can be shooed along, demons banished…and the house becomes much, much better.

But, lets imagine this family decides they want out.  Well, they’re not stupid after all.  By now they know that they live in a house that is working against them.  And, if they’re not able to make it much, much better, they want out.

So as their Feng Shui Master, I’ve given them information that has helped convince them to leave the house.  Here’s the dilema.  As a REALTOR(R) should I also list this house?  And, if I do list it, do I tell people I did a Feng Shui consult on it and the results?

Ok, here’s what I think.

1. Yes, I can and should list it if they ask.  After all, I can help them sell it faster by using Feng Shui.

2. Since a Feng Shui Consult is a private consultation, I do not have the right to give out the information the owners have paid for.

3. Since I do not want to (and should not) sell a house without disclosing something I consider a problem, I should advise any prospective buyer (who is interested in the fact that I am a Feng Shui Professional) that a Feng Shui consultation would be a good investment before they buy ANY house, since each family has their own needs.  But, that consultant can’t be me.

4.  I must never, ever give so much as the impression of giving a “bad” feng shui report in order to list a house.  I have to work as hard as possible to “fix” the house for them to live in happily, if that is what they want.

When all is said and done, the house that is horrible for one family may be good for another.  Much of Feng Shui is about matching the people to the house, and using the house in the best way.  After all, a boss of 100 will be able to make good use of energy that could destroy some families.  So, it’s not up to me to advise a buyer whether to buy a house…unless that buyer is my Feng Shui client.

Feng Shui This | Do You Need a Feng Shui Master?

Maybe you do need a Feng Shui Master!  Are you having trouble sleeping?  Are folks fussing and fighting at your house?  Buying a book to learn a little Feng Shui is a good idea, but be careful of which books you invest in.  Some are merely fluff, written to make money for the author, with little substance.  Others bring in true Feng Shui principles.   If you want to do it yourself, I recommend the book with the unfortunate name, “The Idiots Guide To Feng Shui”.   It was written with the novice in mind, but clearly contains an enormous amount of wisdom.

When we do a Feng Shui Consultation we take into account the the landforms, the buildings around the property, any natural water features, the roads to and from that property, and the facing direction of the building to the exact degree…BEFORE we ever walk into the house.

Drawing up the Flying Star Chart tells us where the beneficial energies are, and where the non-beneficial energies are located.

Most people think Feng Shui is all about decorating when that is only a small part of the picture.  Feng Shui is about making the most of the property.  The layout of the house is no more important than the land and forms around the house.  For good Feng Shui, both must work together.

This is not to say that you cannot have good Feng Shui in an area that is less than beautiful.  You can!  But, you’ll have to do more inside to encourage the beneficial energy to be strong and the non-beneficial energy to mind its manners.

If you have a home you need to sell, a Feng Shui Consult would be advisable.  There are Feng Shui techniques that can help you sell your house quicker.  And, if you just want to see if Feng Shui can make your life better, pick up “The Idiots Guide To Feng Shui”.  Or you can call a Feng Shui Master…  I’ll be glad to help.

A View Of These Kentucky Thoroughbreds Is Good Feng Shui

Kentucky Real Estate | Lets buy a horse farm!

Apparently Duncan thinks I should have brought a gift.

A couple of Days ago, Dan and I went for a drive in the countryside.  I wanted to introduce him to a special fellow I had met last fall.   I always feel better after chatting a bit with Duncan.

This visit though, Duncan seemed a bit miffed.  It was as though he was scolding me for being away so long…like I should have been out more often paying homage to his regal nature.  I guess I can’t argue with that.

It reminded me though how fast spring is approaching!  Flowers are starting to bloom! It’s time to start farm shopping…And, if you’re in the market for a small horse farm, I’ve got just the place.  Call me and we’ll go out and tiptoe through the horses.

Kentucky Real Estate | I’m waiting til prices go down…

Your New Kentucky Home

Your New Kentucky Home

Are you waiting for the prices to drop more?  They probably will.   But, consider this, there will be more foreclosures, and this will place more homes on the market.  The more houses available, the cheaper  they will be as sellers try to entice buyers to their property.  It’s simple supply and demand economics.  When the world is covered in gold, the value of gold will be less.  When gold is rare, it’s priced higher.

This would seem to be a good thing for shoppers, but here’s the catch…looks like about April 1st the government will allow the interest rates to rise and we’ll see the interest rates go up substantially and quickly.

So, here’s the thing…you might get a better price on a house, but it will have to be a lot to make up what you’ll be spending on the higher interest rate.  Unless of course, you have the cash to buy what you want without worrying about the interest.  In that case, lucky you!

Kentucky Real Estate | Waiting for Spring

These days Kentucky seems a bit chilled. Even our garden girls are cold. The little pond is frozen and the koi are sleeping beneath the ice…waiting for a quick thaw.  This is when those of us who work in Real Estate rest up and prepare for the busy spring ahead.  One day soon the Bluegrass will be growing and flowers blooming.  FOR SALE signs will be popping up all over, with something for everyone.  For now though, winter has come upon us and it’s time to prepare our businesses and plan our gardens.   Spring will be here soon, with Thoroughbred colts, spring calves, and that gorgeous Kentucky Bluegrass. Rest up.

How long do you think it will take before more businesses are finding out about Feng Shui?  Or, maybe a better question would be, “How long do you think it will be before businesses are not embarassed to admit they use Feng Shui?”
